"How does one keep from "growing old inside"? Surely only in community. The only way to make friends with time is to stay friends with people…. Taking community seriously not only gives us the companionship we need, it also relieves us of the notion that we are indispensable."
- Robert McAfee Brown

The 5th and 6th Graders at South Avondale Elementary School for their film “A1 – Off the Hook” about their Cincinnati neighborhood.

Art Links representatives accept their award from Mayor David Cicilline of Providence (L) and Lorne Adrain of National Neighborhood Day.

The young filmmakers who created “A1 – Off the Hook” are participants in Art on the Block, an afterschool arts program serving K-8 students at Cincinnati Public Schools Community Learning Centers. This program is one of many provided by Art Links, an umbrella arts organization that provides arts in education programming to disadvantaged school districts in Greater Cincinnati. Art Links contracts with over 100 local arts organizations and individual teaching artists impacting over 55,000 students a year.

Art Links’ Teaching Artist Mark Santangelo is a musician, video photographer, and producer who was conducting an "Art on the Block" program at South Avondale Elementary School when he learned of the National Neighborhood Day Short Film Contest. As Mark worked with the 5th and 6th graders on their film, he was overwhelmed with their enthusiasm and desire to speak out about what they like, and what they don’t like, about their urban Cincinnati neighborhood. The prize money will be used to support Art Links’ continuing programs.
